Any situation that competes with a driver’s attention on the road can be a distraction to safe driving.

April has been designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month to educate drivers about distractions and how to practice good distracted-driving safety habits.

We have assembled tips from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to help keep motorists, movers and professional drivers safe when sharing the road.

In the coming weeks. more do-it-yourself movers will begin to share the road with professional truck drivers and motorists.

Additional vehicles on the roadway are among the many distractions all drivers face and challenge their ability to remain safe when behind the wheel.

Examples of distractions to safe driving include talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, adjusting the stereo, entertainment or navigation system.

AAA suggests drivers adjust things like seats, mirrors and climate controls before starting your journey. Avoid the temptation to reach for possessions that may roll around by storing them away.

Eat meals or snacks before you start your trip. If you decide to eat while driving, avoid messy foods that can take your attention away from driving.

If pets and children need your attention, pull over safely and resist the temptation to reach into the back seat, which can cause you to lose control.

For professional truck drivers, distractions can come from inside and outside their truck cabs.

While passing buildings or billboards, drivers could become distracted and suffer a momentary lack of focus.

Penske offers these tips:

  • Turn off all unnecessary devices.
  • Plan ahead.
  • Don't multitask
  • Keep your eyes on the road.
  • Drive defensively

By taking steps to minimize driving distractions, no matter how small, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of other drivers on the road.

Penske Proudly Supports Wreaths Across America to Honor and Remember Veterans/blog/penske-supports-wreaths-across-america-2670482128/

At Penske, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve, and this year, we are proud to support (WAA). Our corporate sponsorship will help ensure that more than 258,000 wreath boxes are delivered to over 4,600 locations across the United States, each containing live, balsam wreaths that honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans.

Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization founded in 1992, began with a single act of gratitude and has grown into a nationwide movement. Its mission is simple, yet powerful: remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach future generations the value of freedom. Each December, National Wreaths Across America Day brings together millions of volunteers to place remembrance wreaths on veterans’ graves at military cemeteries, memorials, and historic sites.

This year, the event took place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, when over three million wreaths were placed to ensure no veteran was forgotten. Penske was honored to support this initiative, with our associates and their families volunteering in local wreath-laying ceremonies. By remembering, honoring, and teaching, we paid tribute to the sacrifices of our veterans, reflecting our dedication to those who have served and ensuring their stories inspire future generations to value and protect the freedoms they defended.

Pictured above: Penske associate George Stefanik paid a heartfelt tribute to his late father and uncle, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Lebanon, PA, where he placed a wreath during the ceremony. "It’s always a humbling experience to visit here, but this event was especially meaningful," Stefanik shared. "I’m honored to work for a company that truly values and supports our veterans and service members."

Military Recruitment a Top Priority at Penske/blog/penske-careers/penske-military-recruitment/

Like many veterans, Sean Wilkins gained a wide range of skills during his time in the Army. After his service, he applied that knowledge to lead talent acquisition at two mortgage companies, which ultimately led to his current role as Manager of Military Recruiting at ҹѰ

In this position, Wilkins combines his passion for talent acquisition with a commitment to helping other veterans transition to civilian life.

“I really enjoyed my time in the Army and had a great overall experience,” said Wilkins. “It helped a lot with being successful in this role, understanding veterans and doing what I can to bring their talent into our organization.”

Sean Wilkins, Manager of Military Recruiting at Penske

Wilkins joined Penske in 2018, and his role was created specifically to lead military recruiting efforts. Much like a military assignment, the job required him to relocate to Texas, where he also manages the logistics training program and is an active member of Penske’s Veterans Business Resource Group (BRG).

He credits the variety of experiences he had in the Army for his ability to juggle multiple responsibilities.

“While I was serving, I had a variety of jobs and took things on that I didn’t have formal training in,” said Wilkins. “I started to realize that being able to step into positions and make opportunities happen creates value that many organizations appreciate. That’s something I really began to learn and understand in the Army, and I’ve tried to bring that to Penske as well.”

Wilkins enjoyed the challenges of stepping into unfamiliar, and sometimes uncomfortable, roles during his military service. He believes veterans with similar experiences can also translate their skills into successful civilian careers.

Learning to collaborate with people from different backgrounds is standard in the military. Despite differences, there is always a shared mission to accomplish–a mindset that Wilkins sees reflected at ҹѰ

“The military is probably the most diverse organization in the world. Despite the various walks of life that are brought together, you have a singular mission that you’re all working towards,” Wilkins said. “So, there are a lot of similarities between coming from the military and how we operate at ҹѰ Both organizations offer opportunities that empower people to be leaders.”

Wilkins believes Penske is at the forefront of veteran recruiting.

“We’re an organization that has invested in positions like mine. Having veterans throughout our recruitment team is an advantage. We have folks who understand first-hand what it means to be a veteran,” said Wilkins. “During the recruiting process, having recruiters who can vouch for Penske and make the connection between their military experiences and potential roles makes all the difference.”

Wilkins continued: “We also connect potential veteran hires with veteran associates who are currently in the role they are interested in. It allows them to have an open conversation about what the job entails. That level of transparency goes a long way.”

Penske’s Veterans Business Resource Group further enhances the company’s veteran hiring efforts.

“Our BRG offers continuous support to both our veteran associates and allies. It has helped us with being recognized as a top military employer, but in addition to being great at hiring veterans, we also want to be excellent at retaining them.” said Wilkins. “The BRG provides a support structure for associates to connect, learn more about Penske, and see how they can grow their careers with us. For anyone that has dedicated their life to this country, we want to provide that same level of dedication as a place of employment.”

Penske’s veteran hiring efforts have been recognized by organizations such as the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), Hiring Our Heroes, Mission: ABLE and Militaryfriendly.com.

Even with this recognition, Wilkins said there is more work to do.

“I’m very excited about all the efforts and progress we’ve made. This is a company that values the military and loves to support veterans. While the support is evident across the entire organization, there’s still a lot of opportunity,” said Wilkins. “We’re looking to expand some of what we do with drivers and diesel technicians into other areas of PTL. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished and have been able to get off the ground here in the past six years, and I’m excited for what we are going to do moving forward.”

Penske Transportation Solutions Among Best Big Companies for Military Veterans/blog/penske-transportation-solutions-among-best-big-companies-for-military-veterans/

has once again received confirmation of its excellence in the recruitment and retention of veterans by being named a 2025 Gold Employer. Penske received this designation from VIQTORY, a veteran-owned business and the publisher of the G.I. Jobs and Military Spouses publications.

“Veterans excel at many different types of roles across our organization,” stated Jennifer Sockel, Penske executive vice president of talent and enterprise services. “Penske recognizes that veterans have a sense of teamwork, dedication, and commitment that enhances the company's workforce. We make a concerted effort to recognize and value their contributions to our success as a leading transportation services provider.”

Institutions earning the Military-Friendly Employers designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey.

Final ratings were determined by combining an organization’s survey score with an assessment of the organization’s ability to meet thresholds for recruitment, new hire retention, employee turnover, and promotion and advancement.

Kayla Lopez, senior director of partnerships at Military-Friendly noted: “We salute these exemplary employers who raise the bar and understand that hiring military personnel is not merely an act of goodwill but a testament to a standard that truly embodies sound business wisdom.”

Penske Truck Leasing Lights Up New Solar-Powered Facility Initiative/newsroom/penske-truck-leasing-lights-up-new-solar-powered-facility-initiative/Reading, Pa. – Nov. 18, 2024 - is lighting up a new solar-powered initiative seeking to boost efficiency, minimize energy costs, and reduce emissions initially at select , and truck locations in the U.S. with the installation and activation of its first-ever rooftop solar-powered systems.

The company’s new state-of-the-art facility in Channahon, Illinois, is now fully operational, and is predominantly powered by an onsite photovoltaic (PV) solar system, expected to generate roughly 80% of the building’s energy needs at 200 KW capacity. Any remaining required energy will be supplied by the local utility provider.

A Grand Rapids, Michigan, location will be active in the coming months and Penske’s Linden, New Jersey, location is expected to go online in 2025. These facilities are also new state-of-the-art locations.

The new facilities incorporating solar systems in Channahon, Illinois, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Linden, New Jersey, are part of the company’s LEED building program.

Under a power purchase agreement with , seven additional Penske facilities in California are expected to be retrofitted with new PV solar systems in the next year, which are expected to yield roughly 600 KW of renewable energy across all locations. These facilities are located in Fresno, Hayward, La Mirada, National City, Riverside, San Diego and San Leandro.

Penske is collaborating with San Francisco-based as its lead project consultant on this solar initiative.

“Our solar program is an important piece of our renewable energy strategy and ForeFront Power continues to be an outstanding partner in helping us bring these projects to fruition,” said Drew Cullen, senior vice president of fuels and facility services at ҹѰ “These investments will allow us to directly generate our own renewable energy to power our locations and continue to support our customers with sustainable solutions.”

On average, four solar panel-powered Penske Truck Leasing facilities will generate an estimated 1-million-kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually and will result in an emissions avoidance of 442 metric tons (MT) CO2e, which is equal to powering nearly 90 homes for one year.

“The initiative to install solar systems at our locations is a part of our company’s LEED-certified facilities process,” explained Ivet Taneva, Penske vice president of environmental affairs. “Investing in solar has considerable economic impacts for our operations as well as the environmental benefits of further reducing emissions related to electricity use.”

Penske Pink Out Celebrates 10 Years of Breast Cancer Awareness/penske-pink-out-celebrates-10-years-of-breast-cancer-awareness/

Penske associates across the organization will join today for Penske Pink Out – an associate-led breast cancer awareness event now celebrating its 10th year.

Maggie Seaman, National Account Manager - Northeast Region, whose mother passed away in 2017 from breast cancer, created Penske Pink Out to promote breast cancer education and to provide support to those battling the disease.

Penske Pink Out first began in 2015 with 200 associates in New Jersey and New York and has grown into a global movement.

Last year, more than 20,000 associates participated across Penske’s global footprint. Associates in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico and the U.S. are expected to participate this year.

“I’ve seen a big shift in how we are open and communicating about breast cancer. Associates have embraced breast cancer awareness and demonstrated it is a very worthy cause,” Seaman said.

Breast Cancer by the Numbers

Penske Pink Out coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which seeks to bring attention to breast cancer and raise funds dedicated to finding a cure.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in Canada and the U.S. trailing only skin cancer.

In Canada, 30,500 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, representing 25% of all new cancer cases in women in 2024, according to the .

Meanwhile, in the U.S. 1 in 8 women, or approximately 13% of the female population will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the

In 2024, an estimated 310,720 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, according to the NBCF.

Driving Breast Cancer Awareness

In the weeks leading up to Penske Pink Out, associates held fundraisers, shared breast cancer information, and rallied around those who shared their connection to breast cancer.

Community service is an important part of the Penske Pink Out movement.

Nearly 200 associates in 15 states are participating in 24 American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks, which raises awareness and funds dedicated to research, 24/7 support for cancer patients and access to lifesaving screenings.

“Penske Associates, their families and friends that participate in their community at a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event; whether it is forming team/joining a team, organizing fundraisers or volunteering on the event planning committee are at the heart of advancing the mission of the American Cancer Society (ACS) to improve the lives of cancer patients and their families,” said Stephanie McDonald, Director of Corporate Relations for the American Cancer Society.

“Their involvement allows ACS to fund research breakthroughs in cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship - and most notably, allows ACS to provide direct patient support to cancer patients and their families, whether it is providing a free ride to treatment or a free place to stay when they are traveling far from home for their cancer treatments,” McDonald said.

In addition, associates have also donated time to support the ACS’ Hope Lodge communities. The network of more than 30 lodges provides a free place to stay for people facing cancer and their caregivers when they travel to seek treatment.

Penske Pink Out could not have been as successful as it has been without the support of associates and leadership across the organization, Seaman said.

“Without leadership support, this would have never taken off in the first place. I think we have not only leadership at Corporate, but senior leaders and area leaders in the field who have embraced it, and it has been something they have encouraged their teams to support and to give back to the community,” Seaman said.

Penske Holds Dedication for Refreshed Classroom at Western Tech/blog/all-lob/penske-holds-dedication-for-refreshed-classroom-at-western-tech/

On Sept. 17, Penske held a dedication ceremony for its recently updated branded classroom at Western Technical College in El Paso, Texas. The classroom will continue to be used for hands-on training, introducing state-of-the-art technologies and creating an exciting learning environment where students can earn industry certifications and pursue career opportunities during and after their studies. It also reaffirms Penske’s partnership with Western Tech and allows them to continue building upon their already strong relationship.

“About seven years back, we really started getting involved with Western Tech and recruiting from them. It may have gone back even further than that,” said District Service Manager Monty Apodaca, who is currently based in Las Vegas but got his start with Penske in 2011 as a technician in Albuquerque. “I started out as a tech, then was a Service Manager in El Paso for a couple of years and that’s where I really started my relationship with Western Tech.” According to Apodaca, the three existing Penske locations in El Paso maintain a relationship with the college. “We have our El Paso location on the east side, El Paso on the west side, and Mesilla Valley. Those three locations often recruit from Western Tech.”

Initially, Western Tech had a career placement advisor who was active in the community. Penske was invited to a career fair at the school, which provided opportunities to engage students directly and generate interest. Since then, Penske has maintained a regular presence.

“There were designated days where we would have one classroom and I would go into the room and talk a little bit about Penske, what we do. It was a chance for about 30 minutes to share information and talk about the company and try to get them excited about a career with us,” said Apodaca.

When speaking with students, Apodaca noted that many had little awareness of the range of opportunities within the company. “Whenever I spoke to a class or a smaller group, it was interesting that no one really knew what we do, who and how big we really are. I’d mention our size on a commercial scale, and that our product lines go way beyond the yellow trucks they see on the road. That would bring out a lot of excitement. I’d talk about how large our fleet is worldwide and how many locations we have across the U.S. It’s impactful having those conversations and putting those facts out there. They don’t typically see how big and how great of a company Penske really is.”

Sharing personal experiences often helped Apodaca connect with the students. “I came in as a technician. I worked at a dealership for ten years prior to coming into ҹѰ I loved turning wrenches, but I wanted to further my career which is one of the reasons I chose ҹѰ I started out as a tech and was able to work my way up through the ranks and move around. There have been a lot of cool opportunities and learnings. The more I talked about that with them, the more they could see a career path and a future for themselves.”

When asked about the importance of Penske’s connection to Western Tech and both short- and long-term goals of continuing to build the relationship, Apodaca mentioned that, in his experience, many students he came across were short-term focused. “They weren’t always looking toward long-term goals most of the time,” Apodaca said. “When we started talking about how many paths Penske offers, even in different departments, they realized that you could do so many things. I’d always hit on that because it got them thinking about how this can be a career, not just a job out of college or their program.”

Many Western Tech graduates have turned into successful associates at ҹѰ The school’s efforts and its relationship with Penske has been key components. “They do a really great job training the students there,” said Apodaca. “They have a top-notch facility, and the school prepares them for what they’re going to see in the real-world. Penske Mesilla Valley donates trucks to the college every year. Those are the trucks we work on that were in our fleet, so when those students come to us, they already have a good idea of what they’re getting into.”

Supply Chain Leaders Embracing Change Management to Address Impact of AI and Consumer Demand for Speed/newsroom/supply-chain-leaders-embracing-change-management-to-address-impact-of-ai-and-consumer-demand-for-speed/READING, Pa., Oct 1, 2024 – The 2025 Third-Party Logistics Study, spearheaded by Dr. C. John Langley of Penn State University and developed in collaboration with and , was unveiled today at the . In its 29th year, the study delves into the evolving dynamics of the supply chain under the theme Navigating Change, reflecting the current challenges within the industry.

The research highlights three pivotal areas: Change management in shipper (companies that manufacture goods or provide services) and 3PL (third-party logistics providers) relationships; artificial intelligence; and the importance of the direct-to-consumer experience.

The research provides a deeper dive into the current state of the 3PL market, and contemporary issues like nearshoring and trends in commercial real estate and supply chain labor are also contained within.

Some key learnings from the 2025 3PL Study include:

  • Change management is essential to keeping pace in the marketplace: Shippers (61%) and 3PLs (73%) both agree that supply chain change management is vital. Demand for change management is driven by customer experience, economic factors and technological advancements. Among survey respondents, 58% of shippers and 76% of 3PLs are currently employing a change management framework.
  • Artificial intelligence is a supply chain competitive advantage: Both shippers and 3PLs are in agreement that AI can be pivotal in automating data analysis, identifying patterns, solving problems and automating repetitive tasks. Results uncovered that 33% of shippers are seeking implementations related to supply planning and demand forecasting, while 19% of 3PLs reported planning implementation in this area. Also, 27% of shippers expressed an interest in transportation and route optimization technologies, while 22% of 3PLs noted they are planning to install these capabilities.
  • The continued e-commerce effect is shaping the direct-to-consumer experience: 48% of shippers and 53% of 3PLs reported that customers routinely expect deliveries in less than two days, and 27% of shippers and 26% of 3PLs noted that there are three-day or less delivery expectations. Shippers (44%) and 3PLs (38%) are willing to absorb a small percentage of the costs related to shipping speeds. Both shippers and 3PLs view delivery speed and further delivery visibility as strong areas of differentiation.

The study surveyed 3PL providers and users of 3PL services to understand the current state of 3PLs and how 3PL relationships are evolving with their customers. The research continues to capture and measure this evolving industry and document the transformation of the third-party logistics sector as new challenges and opportunities emerge. The 2025 study and past versions are available for download at .

“While users and providers of 3PL services continue to report successful relationships, they find themselves having to deal with an increasingly wide range of challenges,” said Dr. C.
